Working in Geosciences
The global energy system still relies on fossil fuels for 80% of its needs. There is an urgent need to accelerate the development of a decarbonized energy system while ensuring that the current system remains sufficiently robust to meet global demand and enable a just, orderly, and equitable transition.
Geosciences perfectly embody this balance between our two pillars: Oil & Gas on one side, and Electricity & Renewables on the other.
Exploration
When a reservoir containing hydrocarbons is detected, geoscientists check whether the field contains oil or gas that can potentially be developed. Geological and geophysical data are then acquired, which makes it possible to identify the best location to drill one or more exploration wells and confirm the presence of hydrocarbons.
Evaluation
Thanks to additional seismic measurements and new drilling, we can define and model the size, configuration, and quality of reservoirs in order to estimate the volumes of oil or gas present and the quantities that can actually be recovered.
Production
Even when the field is in production, geosciences are still essential. They help monitor the reservoir, optimize production, recover and process fluids at the surface, ensure facilities operate efficiently, and extend the field’s lifespan.
Geosciences for Renewable Energy
You might not know this, but geosciences are also essential in renewable energy projects: for making forecasts, reducing risks, managing uncertainties, integrating data, modeling, and working on hydrology or hydrogeology.
In short, for all types of energy, at TotalEnergies, we will always need geosciences — we will always need you!
